What is the difference between a Guardian ad litem (GAL) and a Certified Professional Guardian (CPG)?

A guardian ad litem (GAL) is an individual appointed by the court to represent the best interests of a child or incapacitated person involved in a case in superior court.  Information about GALs in Washington State is available on the Guardian Ad Litem page of the Washington Courts Web site. 


A certified professional guardian (CPG) is an individual or agency who serves as the legal guardian of a least three individuals and provides this service as a profession.   Information about a CPGs in Washington State is available on the Certified Professional Guardian Program page of the Washington Courts Web site.
